Error Message: "Bluetooth Device not found. Please verify that your Bluetooth device is properly connected and turned on"

Error Message: "License invalid, shutting down stack server"

If you encounter the following error message whilst attempting to use your Bluetooth Headset, help is at hand!

'Bluetooth device not found. Please verify that your
Bluetooth device is properly connected and turned on'

Never fear, this bluetooth error message is likely caused by Windows XP having installed its own Bluetooth Driver in lieu of the one that came with your USB Bluetooth Adapter. What you're going to need to do is change the device driver in the Windows Control Panel. Fortunately, it's a simple fix and here's how to do it.

Click 'Start -> 'Control Panel' -> 'System'. Click on the 'Hardware' tab and you should see something like this;

Click 'Device Manager. Next, click 'Bluetooth Radios' then 'right-click' 'Generic Bluetooth Radio';

Select 'Update Driver' from the context menu that appears. This will prompt the 'Hardware Update Wizard';

Select 'No, not at this time' then 'Next'

Select 'Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)' and click 'Next'

Select 'Don't search. I will choose the driver to install' then 'Next'

In the window that appears, select the second device that is listed. (Do not select the 'Generic Bluetooth Radio') and click 'Next'.

Bingo. All finished!

Here's another error message that I encounter from time to time:

'License invalid, shutting down stack server '

I don't usually leave the bluetooth dongle in my computer all the time and the above error message pops up ocassionally when I re-insert the bluetooth USB adapter to connect my BT headset. Fortunately, this one's a relatively easy (though annoying) fix.

Here's the error message:

Ok, press the Ctrl, Alt and Delete keys simultaneously ('CTRL-ALT-DEL') to open the Windows Task Manager (XP). Select the 'Processes' tab, higlight 'BTTray.exe' and select 'End Process'.

You'll be prompted with a task manager warning to which you should just click yes:

Next, you'll need to re-start the bluetooth tray program that we 'stopped' in the previous step. Navigate to the following folder via Windows Explorer - C:\Program Files\WIDCOMM\Bluetooth Software

Select BTTray.exe and double-click to run it.

Finished! That should solve the license invalid message (albeit temporarily). I'm not sure what the permanent fix to this one is but it saves restarting the computer each time the message pops up.

Note: There is a great thread on the Skype website that elaborates on the above error message as well as deals with many other Bluetooth Errors. more...
